Before Smithson Martin becomes a recognized name in touchscreen controllerism, everything begins with MonoTouchLive, a pioneering project created by Pablo Martin.
MonoTouchLive is one of the world’s first touchscreen MIDI controller concepts, designed specifically for Ableton Live. Development begins in mid-2005 as a practical and forward-thinking response to a clear limitation of the time: the near non-existence of dedicated hardware controllers for Ableton Live. Coming from years of live performance experience and experimentation with Ableton on stage since 2002, Pablo Martin temporarily steps away from Traktor and focuses entirely on redefining live control.
Released publicly for the first time on September 4, 2006, MonoTouchLive introduces a radically new way of interacting with music, using touch as the primary performance interface. At a time when touchscreen performance is still largely unexplored, the project quickly gains recognition as one of the earliest and most influential touchscreen MIDI solutions for Ableton Live.
The project attracts early support from forward-thinking artists, including Eric Estornel (aka Maceo Plex, under his alias Maetrik), who becomes one of the first high-profile artists to publicly support MonoTouchLive, helping to validate the concept and push it into the spotlight.
MonoTouchLive lays the conceptual and technological foundation for everything that follows. While it is not officially part of Smithson Martin Inc., it represents the moment where the core vision is born:
breaking away from physical limitations and turning touchscreens into expressive, performance-grade musical instruments.
